Introduction

Juan Minguela’s Viladesuso landing story is the best-known UFO claim attached to Pontevedra, but it is also a good example of why a famous case is not the same thing as a strong case. The core account is vivid: in the early hours, a Vigo hairdresser said he woke in his house near Oia, felt unusual heat, heard his dogs, saw a large green luminous object near the coastal rocks, and later found a pale circular mark where oil-blackened stone had supposedly been cleared. The case matters because it gave Pontevedra a lasting local UFO landmark: the “UFO house” at Viladesuso. Its weakness is just as important. The evidence is mainly Minguela’s own testimony, press retellings, a claimed ground trace and later folklore, not a preserved official investigation or a tested physical sample.[EL ESPAÑOL]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

The Viladesuso Sighting Story

The most commonly reported date for the incident is 27 March 1974, with the story appearing in local press immediately afterwards. A 2023 Vigo-focused retrospective cites the 28 March 1974 front-page account in El Pueblo Gallego, where Minguela described waking at about three in the morning, disturbed by intense heat and by the howling of his three dogs at his Viladesuso property in Santa María de Oia. Looking out, he said he saw a luminous green object beside the house, on or near the rocks.[EL ESPAÑOL]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

The description grew memorable because it was both dramatic and local. Later accounts say Minguela compared the object’s size to a large Vigo city bus, while the El Pueblo Gallego account, as summarised by later reporting, gave dimensions of roughly three metres high and 50 to 60 metres wide. He also said he considered firing at it, then abandoned the idea and retreated indoors. In some retellings, he said he went back to bed and only the next day decided it had not been a dream because his dog had disappeared and the rocks bore a mark.[EL ESPAÑOL]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

There is a date problem that readers should not ignore. Some later articles and folklore summaries place the Minguela event in 1970, sometimes linking it closely with the Polycommander oil spill that same year. Other, more specific accounts identify 27 March 1974 and refer directly to El Pueblo Gallego’s issue of 28 March 1974. For a careful history of the case, the 1974 dating is the stronger working date because it is tied to the named contemporary newspaper report; the 1970 versions are best treated as later compression of the story around the oil-spill setting.[EL ESPAÑOL+2Atlántico]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

The Alleged Rock Trace

The distinctive evidence claim was not just that Minguela saw a light. It was that something had left a visible effect on the shoreline. According to later summaries of the original press account, he said there was a white circular area on the sand and rocks, in a place where dark oil residue had been present for months. He linked this to the idea that the object had landed or hovered low enough to remove or burn away the contamination.[EL ESPAÑOL]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

That detail only makes sense against the recent memory of the Polycommander disaster. The Norwegian tanker grounded near Vigo on 5 May 1970, spilled about 15,000 tonnes of light Arabian crude oil, burned for more than 30 hours, and polluted parts of the Galician coast with oil, tar balls and black film. The coastline south of Vigo, including the Oia area in local memory, was therefore a plausible place for people to remember oil-stained rocks as part of the landscape.[CEDRE]cedre.frOpen source on cedre.fr.

The trace claim is interesting, but fragile. It would be stronger if there were a documented chain of custody, photographs clearly tied to the date, laboratory analysis of rock or residue, measurements taken by investigators, or independent witnesses who saw the mark before and after the alleged event. The available public record, as reflected in later local media, does not provide that level of documentation. It gives a reported mark and Minguela’s interpretation of it. That is enough to explain why the case became famous, but not enough to establish that an unknown craft physically affected the rocks.[EL ESPAÑOL]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

The oil explanation also cuts both ways. On one hand, oil-blackened rocks made any pale patch more noticeable and gave the story a concrete physical hook. On the other hand, oil residues on a wave-beaten coast can be patchy, mobile and affected by weathering, cleaning, tide action, heat, dispersants and local human activity. Without a dated sample or technical analysis, the “white circle” cannot carry the weight later folklore placed on it. The strongest honest assessment is that it was an alleged trace, not verified trace evidence.[CEDRE]cedre.frOpen source on cedre.fr.

Why This Became Pontevedra Folklore

The Minguela case endured because it had the ingredients local memory rewards: a named witness, a recognisable house, a dramatic night-time scene, a claimed physical mark, and a witness who was already a well-known public character in Vigo. Juan Bautista Minguela Domingo was not an anonymous passer-by; later biographical material describes him as a popular hairdresser, charity-minded local personality and eventually a “Distinguished Vigo resident”. That status did not prove his UFO claim, but it helped the story travel.[FlipHTML5]fliphtml5.comFlip HTML5Vigueses-distinguidosFlip HTML5Vigueses-distinguidos

The case also moved quickly from private experience to public performance. Later accounts say Minguela repeated the story many times, appeared on José María Íñigo’s television programme Estudio Abierto, and was even invited to the United States to talk about the incident with UFO enthusiasts. Atlántico’s retrospective says the story drew visitors to Viladesuso and that Minguela eventually had an eccentric UFO monument in the garden, now gone.[Atlántico]atlantico.netAtlántico El Ovni que dejó huella vuelve a la actualidadAtlántico El Ovni que dejó huella vuelve a la actualidad

That public afterlife matters because it helps explain the difference between evidence and fame. The Viladesuso claim became a landmark partly through repetition, media attention and the physical presence of the house on the coast road between Vigo and A Guarda. In 2025, Atlántico reported renewed interest in the restored former Minguela house as the “UFO house”, showing that the story still has tourist and folklore value more than half a century after the alleged event.[Atlántico]atlantico.netAtlántico El tirón turístico creciente de la Casa del OVNI de MinguelaAtlántico El tirón turístico creciente de la Casa del OVNI de Minguela

What Investigators Would Need To Prove More

The Minguela case is often described as a landing or “close encounter” claim because of the alleged rock mark. But by evidence standards, a landing case needs more than a sincere witness and a memorable trace. The key missing pieces are straightforward:

  • Independent contemporaneous witnesses: later reports mention a nearby elderly woman who allegedly felt strange heat, but this is not the same as a detailed, signed, time-stamped statement from a direct observer of the object or trace.
  • Physical documentation: the reported white circle would need dated photographs, measurements, samples and comparison with nearby unaffected rock.
  • Environmental context: tides, weather, salt spray, previous cleaning, oil degradation and human access to the shore would all need to be checked.
  • Official paper trail: a police, military, aviation or municipal record would strengthen the historical record, even if it did not explain the event.

This is where the case differs from some other Spanish UFO files. Spain’s Ministry of Defence later digitised 80 UFO-related files covering about 1,900 pages of strange aerial phenomena involving, in some way, Air Force personnel or material. The public Defence archive includes Galician cases such as Ferrol, Becerreá-Lugo and Noia, but the Minguela incident does not appear as a comparable Pontevedra military file in the published index. Biblioteca Virtual Defensa+2El Progreso de Lugo[bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.es]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

That absence does not disprove Minguela’s story. It means the evidential category is different. The Viladesuso claim sits mainly in the world of press testimony, local recollection and UFO culture, whereas the declassified Defence files contain formal summaries, witness interviews, meteorological notes or operational material depending on the case. For Pontevedra’s UFO history, that distinction is central: Minguela is the province’s most famous story, not its best-documented official case.[Biblioteca Virtual Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

The Most Plausible Reading Today

The fairest reading is neither to mock the story nor to treat it as proof of an extraordinary craft. Minguela appears to have maintained that something happened, and the story’s persistence suggests it made a real impression locally. The setting was unusually vivid: a coastal house, oil-stained rocks from a major maritime disaster, dogs making noise, heat, a green light and a claimed pale mark near the shore. Those details explain why the case stuck in Pontevedra’s UFO memory.[Atlántico]atlantico.netAtlántico El Ovni que dejó huella vuelve a la actualidadAtlántico El Ovni que dejó huella vuelve a la actualidad

The doubts are equally clear. The account depends heavily on one witness. The physical trace was not preserved in a way that allows later verification. The dating is confused in some retellings. The link to the Polycommander oil residue is suggestive but not technically demonstrated. Later media attention strengthened the story’s fame, but it did not add the kind of hard evidence that would turn the case from folklore into a robust unexplained landing event.[EL ESPAÑOL+2VigoÉ]elespanol.comEL ESPAÑOLOvnis en Vigo: los avistamientos más conocidos de la…August 20, 2023 — 20 Aug 2023 — Algunos diarios como Faro de Vigo trans…Published: August 20, 2023

Within Pontevedra’s UFO history, the Minguela case is therefore best understood as a landmark claim with weak physical evidence. It is valuable because it shows how a local UFO story can become attached to a person, a house and a coastline. It is limited because the alleged landing trace remains an anecdotal trace, not a tested one. The most careful conclusion is that Juan Minguela may have sincerely reported an unusual experience at Viladesuso, but the surviving evidence does not establish that something unknown landed there.
