Introduction

Puente Almuhey matters because it is the León case where a local UFO story crossed into Spain’s official military record. Between 24 November and 10 December 1968, several witnesses around this small village reported unusual lights or objects near the road, the railway setting and the nearby hills. The reports were taken seriously enough for the Spanish Air Force’s intelligence structure to open a file, send personnel to the area, gather statements and preserve the material in a 13-page dossier later declassified by the Ministry of Defence.[Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

That does not make the case proof of anything extraordinary. The value of Puente Almuhey is more careful than that. It is León’s strongest UFO file because it has named roles, dates, witness comparisons and an official conclusion that did not identify the object. It is also a doubtful case because the evidence is almost entirely testimonial, descriptions vary, no photograph or radar record is known, and the military itself considered ordinary possibilities such as the Moon or a planet, even if it did not settle on them.[Diario de León]diariodeleon.esDiario de León EE UU reconoce por primera vez expedientes ovni yDiario de León EE UU reconoce por primera vez expedientes ovni y

What witnesses reported in 1968

The Puente Almuhey file covers three reported episodes: 24 November, 8 December and 10 December 1968. The official catalogue entry describes it as an “avistamiento de fenómenos extraños” in Puente Almuhey, León, from 24 November to 10 December 1968, prepared by the Air Operational Command, General Staff, Intelligence Section. The Ministry of Defence record dates the publication to 1968–1969 and lists the physical description as 13 pages.[Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

The first episode, on 24 November, is the most vivid. Local reporting based on the declassified file says a 32-year-old woman from Puente Almuhey described an object roughly two metres across, disc-shaped, red in tone and close to road level, visible for about ten minutes and moving very slowly. A second witness, a 19-year-old mechanic, reportedly gave a broadly similar account but introduced a striking difference: the object appeared to change into something compared with a horn-like form, a discrepancy noted by the military instructor.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

The second episode, on 8 December, shifted the setting from a close roadside object to a distant light near the village. The report as summarised in local press says three witnesses saw an unusual object between about 7.30pm and 8pm, roughly 400 metres from the locality and at an indicated height of about 400 metres. Two of the witnesses were railway employees on the La Robla narrow-gauge line: a pointsman and the station chief at Puente Almuhey. They described a small spherical or oval object, around 30 centimetres across, emitting a steady yellow-white light and remaining in position for a long time.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

The third reported sighting, on 10 December, again involved a white light with slow movement and a long duration. Accounts of the file describe three statements between 7pm and 8pm: two witnesses placed the object towards the south-west and said they watched it for around 90 minutes, while another did not specify direction and gave a duration of about two hours. The described form was again oval or round, but the details were not precise enough to produce a firm identification.[Diario de Valderrueda]diariodevalderrueda.esinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuheyinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuhey

One reason the case retained local force is that a press account appeared at the time. A later reproduction of a La Vanguardia note dated 13 December 1968 reported that an object had been seen over Puente Almuhey, apparently stationary for about three hours, emitting an intermittent white light, and that the station chief had alerted other railway stations including Prado de la Guzpeña and La Espina. That press version is useful because it shows the story was circulating immediately, not only as a later UFO retelling. It also shows how easily the case could grow in the telling: durations, height estimates and the number of observers vary across later summaries.[deleonvengo.blogspot.com]deleonvengo.blogspot.comun ovni en puente almuheyun ovni en puente almuhey

How the Air Force investigated

The Air Force file is what separates Puente Almuhey from most rural UFO anecdotes in León. According to the official Defence Library entry, the dossier belonged to the Air Operational Command and the Air Force General Staff’s Intelligence Section, and it was later held by the Central Library of the Air Force. The same record notes that it was declassified under JEMA 2087 on 26 March 1993.[Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

The trigger was not a sensational national campaign but a local report from a railway official. Local coverage of the declassified papers says the Puente Almuhey station chief wrote to the Air Sector chief on 13 December 1968 after the sightings, prompting military personnel from the León military aerodrome to visit the village on 14 December. They gathered statements and checked the reports rather than simply filing the incident as press gossip.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

That official attention gives the case weight, but it also gives the doubts sharper edges. The file did not contain the kind of evidence that would normally move a case beyond witness testimony: no known photograph, no recovered object, no physical trace, no instrumented observation and no independent radar confirmation. What it preserved was a structured set of statements, comparisons and official comments. In UFO history, that is better than folklore, but it is not the same as a technically verified event.[Verne]verne.elpais.comOpen source on elpais.com.

The broader Spanish context also matters. Spain’s Ministry of Defence later made its Air Force UFO files available through the Defence Virtual Library; contemporary reporting described more than 1,900 pages of documents on sightings from 1962 to 1995, with files including summaries, considerations, conclusions and classification proposals. Puente Almuhey sits inside that national archive, but it remains a small local case within it, not a famous pilot or radar incident.[Verne]verne.elpais.comOpen source on elpais.com.

Why the official file did not settle the matter

The strongest honest reading of Puente Almuhey is that the Air Force could not identify the reported phenomena, but also did not prove they were extraordinary. Local accounts of the file say the investigator found discrepancies between statements and concluded that the nature of the objects could not be determined. That is an unresolved classification in the everyday sense: the file did not establish a conventional cause, yet it also did not establish an exotic one.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

The witness accounts pull in different directions. The 24 November report sounds close, red, disc-like and low by the road. The 8 and 10 December reports sound more like distant lights, small apparent angular size, long duration and slow or no movement. Those are not necessarily incompatible, but they make one single explanation harder. They also create a familiar UFO-investigation problem: witnesses may be sincere and still produce descriptions shaped by distance, darkness, expectation, terrain and uncertain scale.[Diario de Valderrueda]diariodevalderrueda.esinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuheyinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuhey

The military considered ordinary astronomical possibilities. Reporting on the file says it raised, “very remotely”, the possibility that the first event could have involved the setting Moon and that the second could have involved a planet under unusual visibility or low-cloud conditions. That cautious wording is important. The official investigator did not present these as proven solutions, but the fact that they were considered shows that the file was not written as a simple endorsement of an alien craft narrative.[Diario de León]diariodeleon.esDiario de León EE UU reconoce por primera vez expedientes ovni yDiario de León EE UU reconoce por primera vez expedientes ovni y

A meteorological check reportedly did not produce a matching atmospheric explanation for the relevant days. That point slightly strengthens the unresolved status of the case, but only slightly. A negative weather check does not remove astronomical misidentification, distant artificial lights, railway or road-related lights, aircraft at awkward angles, or ordinary objects seen under poor viewing conditions. It only means the investigator did not find a neat weather phenomenon that matched the witness reports as recorded.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

The number of witnesses is another area where the story needs care. Some later reports speak of eight witnesses, while other accounts of the official file refer to seven or to six named people with repeated observations by some witnesses. Diario de León, writing in 2022, described five men and two women and said the papers preserved seven witness statements; other local summaries mention eight testimonies across the three dates. That difference is not fatal to the case, but it is exactly the kind of small inconsistency that should stop readers from treating later retellings as clean data. Why Puente Almuhey became León’s key UFO case

Puente Almuhey became León’s key UFO case because it sits at the intersection of three things: rural testimony, an immediate local communication chain and an official Air Force file. Many provinces have stories of strange lights; far fewer local cases entered a declassified military archive with a dated file, named institutional authorship and preserved witness summaries. The Defence Library entry confirms the place, date range, issuing military body, 13-page extent and declassification note, which gives the case a documentary spine that most local sightings lack.[Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

The railway setting also helps explain why the report travelled. The station chief was not just a private witness; he occupied a communications role in a village connected to other stations along the line. The contemporary press version says he contacted neighbouring stations after seeing the light, while later reporting says his communication to the military helped open the investigation. That does not make his observation automatically correct, but it explains why the case did not disappear as a passing village rumour.[deleonvengo.blogspot.com]deleonvengo.blogspot.comun ovni en puente almuheyun ovni en puente almuhey

Within León’s UFO history, this makes Puente Almuhey a useful anchor rather than a spectacular proof case. It is stronger than unsupported local lore because the documentation exists in the official Spanish UFO file system. It is weaker than the most technically interesting UFO cases because the evidence remains witness-led and because the descriptions are inconsistent enough for the investigator to avoid a firm conclusion.[Verne]verne.elpais.comOpen source on elpais.com.

It also shows why local UFO history should not be sorted into only two boxes: “debunked” or “confirmed”. Puente Almuhey belongs in a middle category. It was investigated. It was not explained with confidence. It was not backed by physical or instrument data. Its best evidence is not dramatic footage, but the survival of a modest official file showing that several people, including railway workers, reported something unusual in the same small area over a short period.[Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa]bibliotecavirtual.defensa.gob.esOpen source on gob.es.

What the doubts leave standing

The main doubts are not minor details; they define the case. The reported objects differ in colour, size, shape, distance and duration. A red disc-like object near a road is not the same observational problem as a small yellow-white or white light apparently hanging above a locality for an hour or more. The “horn” transformation mentioned in one account is especially hard to reconcile with the simpler disc and light descriptions, and the military summary reportedly flagged it as a discrepancy.[ileon.eldiario.es]ileon.eldiario.esdefensa desclasifica expediente x avistamientos ovni puente almuhey 1 9458017Defensa desclasifica un 'Expediente X' de avistamientos…24 Oct 2016 — El primer testimonio desclasificado pertenece a una mujer vecina…

There is also the problem of estimating size and height at night. A witness who says an object was 30 centimetres across, 200 metres high or 400 metres away may be reporting an impression rather than a measured fact. Without a known distance, a small nearby light and a large distant light can be very difficult to distinguish. This is one reason long-duration night-light cases often remain ambiguous even when witnesses are honest and careful.[Diario de Valderrueda]diariodevalderrueda.esinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuheyinteligencia ejercito desclasifica expediente ovni puente almuhey

The official file’s unresolved status therefore should be read narrowly. It means the available investigation did not identify the object or objects. It does not mean the Air Force confirmed a craft, a technology or an extraterrestrial origin. In the Spanish archive context, “unidentified” simply means not identified from the evidence at hand; even national coverage of the Defence files stressed that the term does not imply alien life and that many files point towards ordinary causes such as meteorology, balloons or non-coincident testimony.[Verne]verne.elpais.comOpen source on elpais.com.

What remains standing is still worth attention. Puente Almuhey is a compact example of how a UFO case becomes historically durable: a striking local experience, credible-seeming social roles, immediate reporting, official paperwork and later rediscovery through declassification. The doubts weaken any dramatic claim, but they do not erase the case’s documentary importance for León. The best conclusion is balanced: Puente Almuhey is unresolved in the record, important in the province’s UFO history, and too thinly evidenced to bear the stronger claims sometimes attached to it.
